Moderate (conscious) sedation is commonly used in endoscopic procedures eg: oesophagusduodenoscopy, colonoscopy, and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography, to provide adequate control of pain and anxiety during the endoscopic procedure.

Dossa et al. (2021) mentioned that sedation prior to the endoscopy procedure can help decrease patients’ anxiety and discomfort, and provides the endoscopist to have an ideal environment for a thorough examination. An international study showed that 21 centers across 11 countries found large differences in the type of sedatives used, staffing during procedures, and the equipment used to monitor sedated patients.
