Plant Design Assignment, SIT, Singapore: Explain using relevant process requirements/service requirements the need to perform pipe sizing and pump selection
University | Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) |
5.1.1 Introduction and Design Statement
• Explain using relevant process requirements/service requirements the need to perform pipe sizing and pump selection.
• Describe the design statement of the Pipe sizing and pump selection. A design statement is the statement used to check the outcome of the design. For pipe sizing and pump selection, the minimum design statement could be arranged in this manner:
“ To perform pipe sizing to transfer xx m3 /hr of liquid consisting of x% (mole) of A and Y% of B ….. from …….. to ……….. and select a pump to deliver it ”
5.1.2 Methodology in Pipe Sizing
a. Basic Design Procedure and Theory
The design theory (Bernoulli) and steps (pipe sizing, pressure drop calculation) should be explained briefly in the report. Explanation using an algorithm (flow chart) is highly encouraged.
b. General design consideration:
- STATE the main pipe sizing criteria you have selected.
- Provide the Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) of the section that you are sizing. P&ID must follow the standard guidelines (refer to the resources provided in Brightspace for P&ID).
Below is a sample of the P&ID of a typical centrifugal set-up with a feedback flow control loop.
Figure 2. P&ID of a typical centrifugal pump set-up and flow control loop.
5.1.3 Selection of Materials for Construction
Describe all relevant characteristics of chemicals (chemical/physical properties) involved in the pipe sizing and pump selection. These characteristics will be used in the selection of materials for construction.
Materials of Construction (MOC)
- List the criteria used in selecting the MOC.
- State the possible MOC for this work.
- State the MOC selected.
- Provide justification for the selected MOC by linking the relevant characteristics/process condition/service requirements with the properties of the selected MOC and criteria used. The use of an engineering decision matrix is NOT required.
