This assessment is made up of two parts:

Part 1: Essay (2,500 words, 70%)
Discuss how a preceptor or mentor would develop learning, teaching and assessment strategies to support a nursing student, or new member of staff, to achieve successful learning outcomes in a clinical learning environment.
1. Introduction (200 words)
Provide a brief outline of the content presented in the main body of the essay. No references are required in the introduction.
2. Main Body of Essay
The main body incorporates four sections. Citations (evidence) are required throughout.
Section A (500 words)
Introduce the role of the preceptor or mentor in the clinical learning environment, and discuss key qualities that support effective learning, teaching and assessment.
Section B (500 words)
Discuss the impact of the relationship between the preceptor or mentor and the learner, and identify potential impacts of the clinical environment on the learning experience.
Section C (500 words)
Briefly describe Fleming’s (2006) VARK learning styles and one learning theory, then critically discuss how these can be applied to support learning, teaching and assessment. Choose one learning theory from:
- Knowles’ theory of andragogy
- Pedagogy
- Bandura’s social cognitive theory
- Behavioural learning theory
Section D (500 words)
Discuss strategies that support effective assessment in the clinical learning environment. Choose two strategies from:
- Objective setting
- Use of the SMART approach to objective setting
- Facilitating open and timely feedback
- Formative and summative assessment
3. Conclusion (300 words)
Summarise key learning points from the main body of the essay. No references are required in the conclusion.
Part 2: Reflective Essay (1,000 words, 30%)
Discuss how the learning gained from this module could be applied to your role as a preceptor or mentor to support a nursing student, or new member of staff, to achieve successful learning outcomes in your clinical learning environment.
- Write a personal reflection identifying how learning from this module has developed your understanding and practice as a preceptor or mentor in your clinical area.
- Complete a SWOT analysis of your clinical learning environment and use it as the basis for your reflection.
- Use Borton’s (1970) reflective model with the headings What, So What and Now What, identifying opportunities for change in the “Now What” section.
- Write this section in the first person. No references are required in the reflective essay.
- Include your SWOT analysis as an appendix.
References
- Use APA 7th style for in-text citations and present the reference list at the end of the Part 1 essay.
- Make sure every reference cited in the text appears in full in the reference list.
- Aim for approximately 25–30 references for the Part 1 essay. The reference list is not included in the word count.
Presentation
- Complete and submit the essay within the assessment template provided.
- Ensure accurate grammar and spelling and keep to the word count.
- Use Arial, font size 12, with 1.5 line spacing.
- Include the SWOT analysis of your clinical learning environment as an appendix (appendices are not included in the word count).
