Task:

Sustainable tourism (ST) has gained global recognition by the tourism industry and government organizations as well as the academic community as a universally accepted paradigm for tourism development since the 1990s (Macbeth, 2005; Weaver, 2006). It is also argued that the principles of ST had long existed well before its inception from as early as the prehistoric period (Edgell, 2020, p.36).

1. Write a 1000-word essay in which you: compare and contrast three (3) definitions of ST from recent credible sources (both academic and non-academic); and discuss potential challenges and opportunities that practitioners in tourism and other relevant stakeholders may face in implementing ST based on those definitions.

2. In a 3-minute video, describe the process by which you researched definitions of ST; chose the three definitions for your essay; determined their strengths and weaknesses; and settled on your essay structure.

In the essay, you are required to write in the 3rd person (i.e. not I, me, you, we, our, etc.). You are also required to use the appropriate format for university essays. Your essay must include:

• An introduction, which introduces the topic, states the argument of the essay and states what points the essay will cover. (i.e. outlines the main points).

• A body, which (1) reviews the key literature and concepts related to the essay topic, and (2) critically discusses the main points of the essay (and builds the sustained argument), with industry examples to support your arguments.

• A conclusion, which restates the main argument.
