- Ability to analyse literature and apply findings to generate creative solutions.
- Ability to articulate your analysis and recommendations/opinions professionally in a formal oral presentation.
Lessons gained:
- Awareness of how to produce a team-based professional oral presentation.
- Awareness of how to collaborate productively in a team to produce a professional oral presentation.
What do I need to do?
This warehouse design project is a group (each group comprising of strictly six persons, subject to size of cohort) assignment. The task is to design a double storey with high ceiling warehouse/distribution centre (DC) to store and perform order fulfillment for replenishment to retail stores and online orders to consumers. Each floor layout and operations will focus on one type of order fulfillment e.g. Level 1 layout and operations focused on online order fulfillment and Level 2 layout and operations will focus on retail order fulfillment OR VICE VERSA. The warehouse/DC is to be built on an empty premise with a land area of 40,000sqft in a location that will provide quality connections to various modes of freight transportation.
The design of your warehouse layout must clearly indicate the main and support processes that occur in a warehouse/distribution centre. Flows/movement of people, goods and materials handling equipment should also be clearly indicated via coloured arrows. A legend explaining what the shapes, figures, colours, etc represent is also required.
While product ranges are assigned, the first task of Groups is to determine a range of products/items/stock keeping units (SKU), to be managed by your warehouse/DC. In addition, Groups will
need to establish assumptions used to influence the warehouse design and operations; and create an Excel spreadsheet listing 30 SKUs. This list and/or operating assumptions may be shown to RMIT lecturer for informal feedback during Session Two and/or before the end of Session 3, to facilitate the design process.
Groups can use their preferred digital illustrating tool such as PowerPoint, Canva or Miro to design their warehouse layout. However, for the purpose of submission into Canvas, PowerPoint is preferred as the software is free, user-friendly and most importantly, compatible to the Canvas system.
For Assessment Task 1a, all members of the Group will deliver a 15-minutes presentation followed by 5-minutes of Q&A. The presentation should highlight major features of their warehouse layout design e.g. main and support warehouse processes. The PowerPoint slides should have footers indicating group ID and names of presenters (see image below).
Group Leaders will submit their groups’ oral presentation slides into the Assignments module in Canvas. A link titled” Assessment Task 1A – Live Oral Presentations” is provided. To help Dr Chang quickly identify respective Groups, please name your file with the Course Code, Term and Group Number e.g. “OMGT2224S12026-Group01”
Use of AI (excluding text editing software e.g. Grammarly) is not appropriate for this assessment task. This task assesses your ability to analyse a case study to determine what the issues are in responsible leadership and your own reflection of your experience and planned career. More will be discussed in Session One.
What to submitted for Assignment 1a?
PowerPoint presentation slides + a sample list of 30 Stock Keeping Units + a list of 6 to 8 critical assumptions that influence the design of the warehouse layout and operations (full list to be submitted in Assignment 1b) + Group warehouse layout + Each Group members’ contributions, in percentage, towards the preparation of the assignment.
How will the task be assessed?
See rubric below.
