ICT114 Computer Architecture Assignment, SUSS, Singapore: A digital system uses 8-bit for integer representation and 32-bit for floating-point number representation
Question
A digital system uses 8-bit for integer representation and 32-bit for floating-point number representation. Analyze the various number representations and answer the following questions.
(a) Express the ASCII character Q in 8-bit binary representation.
(b) If 8-bit sign-magnitude representation is used to represent integers, what is the range of decimal values it can represent? Show your work.
(c) Given A = CE16 and B = 8D16.
(i) Express the value of A and the value of B in an 8-bit binary representation. Show your work.
(ii) Show how the digital system computes the logic operation A XOR B. Express the result in hexadecimal. Show your work.
(d) Given X = 11810 and Y = 8810.

(i) Express X and Y in 8-bit binary if 2’s complement signed integer representation is used. Show your work.
(ii) Find the result of Y – X by performing the computation in 2’s complement
arithmetic. Assume 2’s complement arithmetic is performed using the addition of Y + (-X). Convert the result to decimal and show it is equal to -30. Show your work.
(e) The hexadecimal number C150 0000 represents a 32-bit floating point number. Its representation is given in Figure Q1(e). What is the decimal value? Show your work.
