In Democracy in America, Tocqueville argued that the very principle of equality—the foundation of modern democracy—can paradoxically pose a threat to individual freedom. Critically evaluate the validity of Tocqueville’s claim in the context of contemporary democratic societies.

• Critically evaluate the relevance of this argument today. Use specific contemporary examples to support your analysis.
• Conclude your essay with a brief personal reflection on how this exercise has shaped or deepened your understanding of the relationship between equality and freedom—two central principles of modern democratic life.
