Aim: The purpose of this paper is for students to review a health service issue and propose an HSR study that can address the issue.
Achieved learning outcomes:
- Distinguish research designs used in health service research and apply them to a range of research questions.
- Evaluate and propose appropriate research methodology to overcome issues of bias, chance and confounding, in both randomised and non-randomised studies.
- Measure and examine user perspectives in the design and evaluation of health services.
- Apply rigorous and sound methodology to develop a health services research project.
Instructions:
Students are required to submit an individually written research proposal of not more than five pages to demonstrate their ability to conceptualise a research topic, design, synthesise the relevant literature and apply rigorous and sound methodology to develop a health services research project. The format of this proposal follows the National Medical Research Council (NMRC) Letter of Intent (LOI) Format. References are not counted towards the page limit.

The student will be assessed on the cohesiveness of the research proposal, and specifically in the following areas:
- Original applied research idea with clear rationale (20%)
- Comprehensive and relevant literature review (30%)
- Appropriate research design, methods and analytic framework (30%)

- Formatting and references (10%)

o Correct APA in-text citation and referencing
