“Acquiring the right assets is essential to developing a proper security posture. There are many assets that could benefit an organisation, but there is one asset in particular that is of great priority and value across the board: the security team” (Alger, 2024).

The lynchpin of any organisation’s security posture is a well-functioning, effective, cooperative, motivated and cohesive security team – it is the fundamental component upon which an organisation’s defence response rests upon. The most state-of-the-art security software and technology, the highest budgets and the most comprehensive security plans are only as effective as the team that formulates and implements them.

(a) The management of a security team, regardless of its size, composition and industry, is bound to be beset with challenges. With reference to department structure, organising structures, and roles, responsibilities and authority of security personnel, differentiate FOUR major, distinct challenges that a security team can encounter. Begin your discussion with a brief explanation of the significance of security management and illustrate your answer where relevant. (40 marks)

(b) The scope of security duties a security team may undertake will differ according to the particular entity they are deployed in. For instance, the suite of security services that are required in a bank would differ from that of the services required in an educational institution, a mall, a condominium or pharmaceutical manufacturing facility.

Conduct research and choose THREE such distinct entities. Describe, in a
comparative manner, the suite of security services (primary duties performed) that the security team will provide. For each entity chosen, differentiate the significant tangible and / or intangible asset(s) that require protection by the security team.
