Watch the following videos of two children who are between 3-and-4 years of age and answer Questions 1a, 1b, and 1c.
• Video 1- Peaches: emotional outburst after his fruit falls on the floor
• Video 2 – Time’s up: emotional outburst after his turn is over
(a) Examine and interpret the behaviours exhibited by the focus child in each video and discuss the possible reasons behind the behaviours using social-emotional development theories. (650-word limit) (20 marks)
(b) Analyse and compare the strategies employed by both teachers in the videos to support the respective child’s behaviours. Discuss these strategies in relation to Gartrell’s theory of mistaken behaviour. Evaluate the potential impact of the teachers’ efforts on each child’s sense of self and emotional awareness. (850-word limit) (30 marks)
(c) Propose TWO (2) alternative responsive strategies from Dan Siegel’s Whole Brain Approach to support the child in the ‘Peaches’ scenario. For each strategy, provide a rationale by linking it to the observed behaviours and relevant theoretical concepts covered in the course. Additionally, explain how each strategy could be implemented in practice to offer a clear and detailed understanding of its application. (650-word limit) (20 marks)
(d) Propose a follow up plan to further develop the child’s self-awareness, emotional literacy and expression in relation to this context.
