Question 1 (50 marks)
You are a consultant for a new commercial office building project in Singapore that aims to achieve energy efficiency while maintaining a comfortable indoor environment.
(a) Propose and describe with justification, the type of air-conditioning system you would recommend for the building.
You are to consider options like Variable Refrigerant Volume (VRV), Chilled Water Systems, or Direct Expansion (DX) systems in your proposal. (25 marks)
(b) You have been tasked with evaluating the choice between a Constant Air Volume (CAV) system and a Variable Air Volume (VAV) system for this building.
(i) Identify the key differences between CAV and VAV systems in terms of design, operation, and energy efficiency. (6 marks)
(ii) Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each system for a commercial office setting. (12 marks)
(iii) Recommend which system would be more suitable for achieving energy
efficiency and occupant comfort in Singapore’s tropical climate. Justify your
recommendation. (7 marks)
Question 2 (50 marks)
You have been appointed as the project manager for a new 30-story mixed-used residential and office building. The client wants to ensure that the building complies with fire safety standards while also optimizing cost and reliability.
(a) Design and describe a fire protection strategy that incorporates the use of automatic sprinkler systems, dry and wet risers, and hose reel systems.
Explain your choices, considering the different sprinkler systems (wet pipe, dry pipe, pre-action, and deluge systems) and their suitability for various building zones (e.g., residential units, car parks, or server rooms). (30 marks)
(b) Discuss potential challenges in implementing these systems in a high-rise building and how you would address them to ensure compliance with fire protection standards. (20 marks)
