In this GSP216 TMA, SUSS students advise on a familiar banking tension: business teams want faster digital product launches while compliance must keep the bank within regulatory standards. The single case question covers the compliance function’s roles, the part DocuSign and Singpass play in compliance work, and the impact of two technology risks on banks and customers.
Question 1: ABC Bank Ltd Case
ABC Bank Ltd is a mid-sized regional bank headquartered in Singapore, with operations across retail banking, corporate banking, wealth management and digital banking. The bank’s Compliance Department is led by a Chief Compliance Officer (CCO), who reports directly to senior management.
The Dilemma
To remain competitive, senior management at ABC Bank is seeking to accelerate growth in digital banking. However, business leaders have expressed concerns that compliance reviews are slowing down innovation and delaying product launches. As a result, the Head of Compliance must consider how to:
- Maintain regulatory standards without unnecessarily hindering innovation
- Assess whether certain controls can be implemented after launch as post-implementation controls
- Communicate compliance requirements clearly and effectively to business units
Answer the following questions
- Describe the roles and responsibilities of the Compliance function in ABC Bank. (50 marks)
- Discuss how DocuSign and SingPass technology have helped support the Compliance function. (30 marks)
- Technology has transformed the banking industry but also introduces several risks. Choose two of the following risks. Explain each risk and analyse its impact on banks and customers. (20 marks)
- Increased vulnerability of customer data to cyberattacks
- Risk of impersonation and fraud
- Risk of hacking and unauthorised access
Submission Notes

For GSP216, examiners expect the compliance function to be described in the context of a Singapore bank, not as a textbook list: advising business units, monitoring and testing, regulatory reporting to MAS, staff training and escalation through the CCO. The best answers also suggest how risk-based reviews and agreed post-launch controls let compliance keep pace with digital banking, give real examples of DocuSign and Singpass in onboarding and documentation, and weigh two cyber or fraud risks carefully.
