This assignment is worth 15% of the final mark for BME315 Rehabilitative and Assistive Engineering.

This TMA covers materials studied in Unit 1 to Unit 3 of the module. You should review these materials in both your textbook and the unit notes before beginning the assignment. In addition, you may find it necessary to review and explore publicly available information to provide better answers to the questions.

PRESENTATION OF REPORT

When preparing your assignment, you should take care in the construction, layout, and clarity of your answers. This will aid your tutor during marking, but more importantly it should help you to formulate a better answer. A portion of your marks will depend on how you present your answers. Hence, you would do well to express your thoughts in logical sequence, minimise grammatical mistakes, and present your answers in ways that are clear and easy to read (e.g. in tables where appropriate). Some specific guidelines when you prepare your assignment reports are:

• Have a clear structure, introduction, main body, discussion and conclusion with separate section headings where appropriate;

• Write in a clear and concise style;

• Substantiate your statements with relevant information or data; and

• Cite all references properly with surname of the author and the year of publication, such as (Smith, 2005), or [1].

• List of reference shall be prepared according to APA style, i.e. Creditor M. C. (1993). Hazards of hospitalization of the elderly. Annals of internal medicine, 118(3), 219–223. In this TMA, you are asked to prepare a project proposal which involves a research study of Development of a Robotic Device for Assisted Hand Rehabilitation. Your project proposal must include the following sections.

Question 1

Abstract

In no more than 300 words, concisely describe the specific aims, hypotheses, methodology and approach of the project proposal including its importance to the furtherance of biomedical product development with clinical significance. The abstract must be self-contained so that it can serve as an accurate description of the project proposal understood by a nonscientific/medical audience. (10 marks)

Question 2

Background and clinical need

This section should be prepared by answering the following questions. Keep the write-up not more than 500 words.

(a) Provide a title of proposal.
(b) Describe the background and the significance of the clinical need identified which the solution intends to fill.
(c) Demonstrate knowledge of the existing assistive technologies (AT) based on the current solutions and their shortcomings.
(d) Discuss the requirements of proposed solution.
(e) Construct the objective/aim of the proposal. (20 marks)

Question 3

Description of the invention

Design an appropriate assistive technology (AT) device. Illustrate the invention by answering the following questions. Keep the write-up to not more than 1,500 words.
(a) Evaluate the need and rationale of developing the proposed solution.
(b) Formulate the methods/approach and components of the solution and discuss how it works.
(c) Indicate direct competitors. How is the proposed solution better than existing technologies/product/service? (40 marks)

Question 4

Intellectual property management
Develop a clear intellectual property (IP) plan going forward with the ultimate objective of generating and enhancing the IP. Keep the write-up no more 500 words.

(a) Provide the relevant background IP for the proposed solution.
(b) Briefly describe any possibility of IP generated from the solution.
(c) Examine how the IP is filed.
(20 marks)
